The Courant Named Outstanding Editorials
The Courant has been recognized by the national Society of Professional Journalists for its outstanding editorials on the Dec. 14 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
The SPJ’s Sigma Delta Chi Awards recognize exceptional journalism around the nation. The Courant’s editorials were judged against those of newspapers of 100,000-plus circulation. The writers are Tom Condon, Maura Casey, Robert K. Schrepf and Henry McNulty.
In her letter to the judges, Opinion Editor Carolyn Lumsden wrote, “Most contest entries for editorial writing are the result of long, carefully planned campaigns. We did not have the time to plan and execute a campaign. The state was reeling. We had to write immediately, shaking off our own shock to express the state’s emotions, provide comfort, and come to terms with this inconceivable evil. Our editorials reflect our writers’ extraordinary professionalism. They have spent a cumulative century and a half in this craft. The state needed all of that experience at this pivotal moment, and more: wisdom.”
We are proud of our writers for coming to the aid of a community traumatized by an unthinkable event with the words that were needed at that terrible time. We thank the SPJ for recognizing our editorials.

CT1 Media Digital Chief Heading To Atlanta
Rick Hancock, CT1 Media’s digital platform director, is leaving the combined Hartford Courant and Fox CT newsroom for a job in Atlanta at the end of the month.
On April 1, Hancock will join the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as editor of the newspaper’s paid digital products.
“I wish Rick nothing but the best,” said Richard Graziano, publisher, president and CEO of the Hartford Courant and general manager of WTIC and WCCT. “He has been a valuable asset to the digital growth at CT1 Media and will missed by all who worked with him.”
Christine Wolfram Taylor, courant.com homepage editor, will manage CT1 Media’s digital platform on an interim basis.
Hancock led the newsroom’s digital staff for more than two years and also made regular appearances reporting about technology for the Fox CT Morning News. His last day will be March 29.
“The future of digital journalism is practiced every single day in our newsroom. It was an honor to lead the digital effort,” Hancock said. “No other newsroom in the country can top what we do online, on-air and in print. The journalism experiences I gained here will only be outmatched by the lifelong friendships I now have.”
