PIX11 Announces Middle School Winner of “Fuel My School” Contest for NYC Public Schools

WILLIAM A. MORRIS I.S. 61 in Staten Island received $5,000 from PIX11 for school supplies

NEW YORK, N.Y.—March 28Each year, school teachers in the US spend an average of $500 outofpocket on classroom supplies (Forbes.) PIX11, Tribune Broadcasting’s New York flagship station, is pleased to announce the middle school winner of the station’s FUEL MY SCHOOL initiative:  I.S. 61 in Staten Island.

PIX11 and Reporter Dan Mannarino announced I.S. 61 as the winning school on Thursday, March 24 and presented Principal Susan Tronolone with a $5,000 check to be used on school supplies or technology – the items the school cannot afford and feel would make a difference in the lives of their students.

I.S. 61 English Teacher Nancy Zazulka wrote: “Most school-age kids wake up to an alarm clock, but in our community, we wake up to helicopters and police sirens. Knowing that so many of them want a better and safer future makes us work that much harder for them. Our students are our kids, part of our heartbeat, a permanent etching on our hearts and souls. While we hope that the time they spend with us will make a difference in their lives, the truth is, the time we spend with them makes our lives better. Our school makes a difference because our school is the pulse of the community, the lifeline to a better future.”

The runner up middle school, I.S. 229 in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, will receive a $500 gift card from Modell’s Sporting Goods.  Learn more about the winning middle schools HERE.

PIX11 established FUEL MY SCHOOL to help New York City public school students “fuel their school.”  During the month of February, elementary, middle school and high school students, teachers and parents from public schools in the 5 boros of New York City were invited to submit an essay explaining how their school makes a difference. PIX11 received nearly 600 school submissions.

Next, PIX11 will be making a financial donation to help a high school achieve their academic goals through urgently needed classroom supplies.
