PIX11 Announces High School Winner Of “Fuel My School” Contest for NYC Public Schools

Hillcrest High School In Jamaica, Queens Received $5,000 From PIX11 For School Supplies

NEW YORK, N.Y.—April 4, 2016Each year, school teachers in the US spend an average of $500 out-of-pocket on classroom supplies (Forbes.) PIX11, Tribune Broadcasting’s New York flagship station, is pleased to announce the high school winner of the station’s FUEL MY SCHOOL initiative:  HILLCREST HIGH SCHOOL IN JAMAICA, QUEENS.

PIX11 and Anchor Kori Chambers announced Hillcrest High School as the winning schoolon Friday, April 1 and presented Principal David Morrison with a $5,000 check to be used on school supplies or technology – the items the school cannot afford and feel would make a difference in the lives of their students.

In her submission letter, Norma Feriz-Gordon, the college counselor at Hillcrest High School said, “We help students get jobs, internships, apply to college, write personal essays, apply for financial aid and scholarships. Everyone in the building writes letters of recommendations. We do all of this (and more) with only 6 student computers. Despite this, over 500 college applications have been completed this year and our Valedictorian last year went off to Yale University on a full scholarship. Winning this money could mean getting laptops for the college office.”

The runner up high school, Bronx Envision Academy, will receive a $500 gift card from Modell’s Sporting Goods.  Learn more about the winning high schools HERE.

This concludes PIX11’s FUEL MY SCHOOL initiative which was established to help New York City public school students “fuel their school.”  During the month of February, elementary, middle school and high school students, teachers and parents from public schools in the 5 boros of New York City were invited to submit an essay explaining how their school makes a difference.

“PIX11 is proud to establish the FUEL MY SCHOOL initiative. We received nearly 600 school submissions, and over the course of the contest, nearly 16,000 votes were received.  We hope our donations will make a significant difference in the lives of students and we plan to make this an annual event,” said Rich Graziano, President and GM, PIX11.
