“BROADWAY PROFILES: ROAD TO THE TONYS”

PIX11 PARTNERS WITH THE BROADWAY CHANNEL

TO AIR EXCLUSIVE SPECIAL JUNE 4 AT 11PM ET

NEW YORK, May 28, 2016 – PIX11, Tribune Broadcasting’s New York flagship station, has partnered with The Broadway Channel to present “Broadway Profiles”, a series of specials about Broadway hosted by PIX11’s Emmy-Award winning anchor Tamsen Fadal. The latest installment, “Broadway Profiles: Making Tony History” will air on PIX11 on Saturday, June 4 at 11pm ET. “Broadway Profiles” will also air on WCCT in Hartford on Sunday, June 5 at 12 noon ET.

It’s Broadway’s biggest night and this year is hotter than ever as the 70th Annual Tony Awards take center stage.

It’s swept nearly every award so far this season; now HAMILTON is making history again at the Tony Awards – netting a record of 16 Tony nominations this season. Daveed Diggs, the Tony Award nominated actor who plays both Thomas Jefferson and The Marquis de Lafayette, talks about his friendship with President Obama, the difficulty of playing Jefferson and shows Tamsen his lightning fast rap style.  Plus appearances by Daveed’s co-stars in ‘Hamilton’, Tony nominees Leslie Odom, Jr. (Aaron Burr) and star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda (Alexander Hamilton).

HAMILTON’s lyrical skill with the quill is undeniable. But, there’s another musical that’s flipping the script. Bluegrass and the Banjo are on Broadway in BRIGHT STAR brought to the stage by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell.  Broadway newcomer Carmen Cusack is nominated for a Tony and her co-star AJ Shively couldn’t be more excited. He sits down with Tamsen Fadal to talk and sing alongside Bennett Sullivan, whose Bango playing left Steve Martin not only grinnin’ but also pickin’ alongside him on stage.

Tony Award winner Billy Porter is out of his Kinky Boots and back on Broadway in SHUFFLE ALONG. The powerhouse musical is both making and celebrating Broadway history. Porter talks about why he’s afraid to call himself a Broadway star and the message this show delivers with every performance.

From actor to activist to playwright, Danai Gurira may slay zombies in ‘The Walking Dead’, but 8 times a week her words come to life in ECLIPSED where her pen is just as mighty as her sword.

What does it take to make it on Broadway?  Cynthia Erivo, the Tony nominated star of THE COLOR PURPLE, talks about the power of the voice.  Erivo has advice for women who dream of making it big on the stage.

PIX11 has set up a special section of the station’s website, http://www.pix11.com/backstageonbroadway, where the original on-air content will be housed and-live streamed. The hashtag #BACKSTAGEONBROADWAY has been created to create social engagement with fans through PIX11’s extensive social media channels.

In addition, each Thursday at 10pm, PIX11 News airs “Backstage on Broadway,” a weekly segment hosted by Tamsen Fadal, covering what’s trending on Broadway.

Tamsen Fadal and Broadway Channel SVP Matthew Hege serve as the executive producers for Broadway Profiles.
